Reviews:
- Decanter: Lively fresh ginger leads the way, with pops of candied fennel and pastis to its subtle poached pear, white nectarine and honeysuckle-edged apricot flavours. Wild yeast and lees-ageing bring a touch of funk (and texture) to nose and palate.
- Vinous: Bright straw-yellow. Mineral-accented scents of fresh pear, peach and violet are sharpened by a building citrus zest nuance. Silky and energetic on the palate, offering concentrated orchard and pit fruit, Meyer lemon and candied ginger flavors and a hint of honeysuckle. Closes with repeating florality, a hint of smokiness and impressive, mineral-driven persistence.
Producer Information
Yalumba is a family-owned winery, located in the Barossa Valley of South Australia. It was founded by Samuel Smith in 1849, making it one of the oldest wineries in Australia. Yalumba takes its name from the Aboriginal word for "all the land around". They have vineyards in the Barossa and Eden valleys and a portfolio of more than 40 different wines. After releasing its first wine in 1853, Yalumba is now at the forefront of the Australian wine industry, making wines from classic Australian grapes like Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay but also those that are more often found in the northern hemisphere, such as Viognier, Smillon and Sangiovese. This includes old-vine wines, single-varietal wines, tawy ports and the Fine and Rare collection as well as an organic range and their entry-level Y series. The Fine and Rare Collection is the pinnacle of the expressions in the Yalumba portfolio and encompasses fine single-varietal and blended releases. In the mid 1990s, Yalumba began developing its own sustainable viticulture programme, not just in the vineyards but also in the winery and packaging. As part of this sustainable philosophy Yalumba has planted at least a hectare of biodiverse and natural vegetation for every hectare under vine. The winery was the first in the world to receive the Climate Protection Award from the US Environmental Protection Agency in 2007. Yalumba also has its own clonal nursery where specialist varietals, clones and rootstocks are developed.
