Beautiful long, wavy green leaves with purple frosting. Tender, buttery and sweet. Sow early Spring. Very productive. Great for seed saving because of earliness to go to seed. (Pre 1885 French heirloom from the Vilmorin Garden.) Also known as "Red Celtuce" or "Asparagus Lettuce".
Can be started in early spring and again in the fall. Sow seed thinly in flats or directly into the garden in moist rich soil. Barely cover with find soil or compost and firm the surface. Keep bed evenly moist to ensure germintation. Make successive plantings up to mid-june and again in August for fall crops. Gradually thin feelings to 8 inches apart for looseleaf and 12 inches apart for heading lettuce.
