The floating anamorphic forms and surreal atmosphere of this piece echo the work of Joan Mir, with elements of Paul Klee. We can see the influences of cubism beginning to enter Aguilar Alcuaz's style in this early work, with the layered simplified forms building up this whirlwind landscape. Born in 1932, Federico Aguilar Alcuaz was a Filipino Modern & Contemporary painter known for his highly expressive, gestural works, including interiors, nudes and still lifes. The artist exhibited internationally during his career, becoming appointed National Artist for Visual Arts, Painting, Sculpture and Mixed Media for his home country in 2009. This piece is labelled 'Prueba de Artista' in Spanish, meaning 'Artist Proof'. Artist proofs are highly sought after, being rarer (and therefore more valuable) than other prints in the edition, particularly as they are often manipulated from the final edition, which creates a unique appearance from the rest of the prints.
