Corbo's Prayer to the Virgin MaryA collection of chants to the Virgin Mary written in the late 19th and 20th centuries by Michel Corbo and the Lausanne Vocal EnsembleIn the late 19th and 20th centuries, there was a new movement in France to revisit the polyphony and counterpoint of the Renaissance era. At the center of this movement was the Schola Cantorum, founded in 1894 as a counterpoint to the Paris Conservatory, which promoted the study of harmony and a progressive approach. This album features works by composers who prominently represent the techniques of the golden age of polyphony inherited by the Schola Cantorum. Frank's "Panis Angelicus/Angel's Bread" is a work from the Solemn Mass. Its merciful and beautiful melody is often performed alone. Two soloist versions, soprano and tenor, are included.And "Ode to Old Brittany" by Paul Radomiro, a brilliant student of Faur. This beautiful work is interwoven with Celtic folk songs from Brittany in western France. Paul Berthier was an organist and composer born in Auxerre in central France. He is also known as the founder of the "Boys Choir of the Wooden Cross" in France. Tantum ergo, a song of praise for the Eucharistic Mysteries and for the Father, Son, and Spirit, is characterized by Bertier's refined melodies and skilled formal beauty. Guy Lopartz, a native of Brittany, studied harmony with Dubois and composition with Massenet at the Paris Conservatory, but was exposed to the music of Franck and his school, and became a faithful disciple of Franck's work. The beautiful pure harmonies of the "Mass of Three Voices" are impressive, especially in the Agnus Dei, where the tones of each part, reminiscent of William Byrd's "Mass of Three Voices," sound soft and clear without being muddy.Jean-Alain, brother of Marie-Claire Alain, was killed in action at the young age of 29. The "Melodic Mass for Seventh Quartet" is a work of mystical beauty. The works he left behind in his short life are not atonal music, but elegant and colorful in their diversity.
