Description:
Recorded in late 1960 at Van Gelder Studios, Ray Charles' impulse! One of the first four albums released on the seminal impulse! Produced by Creed Taylor, the album features hard-hitting arrangements by Quincy Jones and Ralph Burns. Charles switched from his usual electric piano to an ecclesiastical Hammond organ, and included trumpeters Thad Jones and Joe Newman, tenor saxophonists Billy Mitchell and Frank Wess, guitarist Freddie Green, and drummer Sonny Payne. It featured many of the members of Count Basie's band. The record reached #4 on Billboard's Pop Albums chart, spawned the first single for Impulse, and helped expand the label's recognition! Jazz pianist Dick Katz wrote in the original liner notes, "The combination of rare talent and extraordinary craftsmanship has produced a record that displays the timeless quality and innate sense of style that only Ray Charles can deliver."Clark Terry, Phillip Guilbeau, Thad Jones, Joe Newman, Snooky Young, Jimmy Nottingham, Joe Wilder, John Frosk(trumpet) Jimmy Cleveland, Urbie Green, Keg Johnson, George Matthews, Henry Coker, Al Grey, Benny Powell (trombone) George Dorsey, Earl Warren, Marshall Royal, Frank Wess (alto saxophone) Budd Johnson, Seldon Powell, Frank Foster, Billy Mitchell (tenor saxophone) Haywood Henry, Charlie Fowlkes (baritone saxophone) Sam Herman, Freddie Green (guitar) Joe Benjamin, Eddie Jones (bass) Roy Haynes, Sonny Payne (drums)
